2000 Volkswagen Beetle

Stephanie VanYork

The Volkswagen Beetle 2000 comes in 5 different models, the GL 2 Dr Hatchback, GLS 2 Dr Hatchback, GLS TDI 2 Dr Hatchback, 108 Turbo 2 Dr Hatchback, GLX 2 Dr Hatchback and can be purchased for around $20,000 depending. I test drove the 1.8 Turbo, which has a lot of get up and go for a little car.

The Beetle received minor changes for this year, which include a brake-wear indicator, improved theft-deterrent system, sliding sun-visor extender, and an optional cold-weather package. Standard equipment includes an anti-theft alarm system, height adjustable seat belts, an AM/FM cassette stereo, tinted glass, power outlets and four-wheel ABS disc brakes. Power windows, a four-speed automatic transmission, metallic paint, and leather seating (although in my belief, the target market for this car doesn't need or want to pay for the leather).

This little turbo can go 60mph in about seven seconds with little to no turbo lag and only averages 27 m/g of gas in the city, and about 30 m/g on the highway. Needless to say the gas mileage isn't bad.

Before I drove the Beetle I honestly thought that the car might feel a little tippy going around corners because of its shape but to my surprise it handles well.

The interior of the Bug has lots of room up front but the room in the backseat is lacking and there are only two seatbelts. They just couldn't squeeze in that extra third seatbelt in the middle.

The seats are comfortable but because I am short my head doesn't come close to touching the headrest. As for the ride, it's relatively quiet and rides smooth even on bumpy roads.
